Armstrong Flooring in Melbourne: Which Range Suits Your Project
Armstrong is the brand Melbourne customers ask us about most by name. Searches for it bring more people to this site than any other flooring brand we carry, and almost all of them arrive with the same question: which Armstrong floor is the right one for my job?
This guide answers that from our actual stock. Everything below is drawn from the ranges we hold and the pages you can browse yourself — not from a marketing brochure.
Who Armstrong is#
Armstrong is an American flooring manufacturer and a global name in vinyl. Their own site is at armstrongflooring.com if you want to read about the company directly.
For a Melbourne buyer, the practical point is this: Armstrong's reputation sits in commercial and high-traffic vinyl rather than in domestic timber-look flooring. That shapes which of their products make sense in a home and which are built for a very different kind of building.
What Armstrong makes — and what Alpha carries#
Armstrong's catalogue is broad. What matters is the part we actually stock, which is vinyl, in two forms:
- Vinyl plank and tile — browse it at our Armstrong vinyl page
- Vinyl sheet — browse it at our Armstrong vinyl sheet page
We hold fourteen Armstrong ranges across those two formats. Several ranges appear in both, because the same product line is made as planks and as sheet.
One honest note so you are not hunting for something that is not there: we do not currently stock Armstrong hybrid flooring. If hybrid is what you are after, our hybrid flooring range covers it with other brands.
What sets Armstrong apart from timber-look alternatives#
Most people comparing floors in Melbourne are weighing hybrid, laminate and engineered timber against each other. Armstrong vinyl sits slightly outside that comparison, and it is worth understanding why before you shortlist it.
It is built around performance, not appearance alone. A large part of Armstrong's range is safety and commercial flooring — products specified because of how they behave underfoot and under heavy use, not because they look like oak. Three of their ranges are named for slip ratings, which tells you what the range is designed to solve.
Sheet vinyl does something plank floors cannot. A sheet floor has far fewer joins than a plank floor. In a room where water is a constant rather than an occasional spill, fewer joins is a genuine structural advantage, not a marketing line.
Colour choice is unusually wide. Several Armstrong ranges we stock run to twenty or more colours in a single range, which gives you room to match an existing scheme rather than compromise on it.
Where Armstrong vinyl suits a Melbourne project#
Commercial and high-traffic spaces. This is where most of the Armstrong range is aimed — places where a floor is walked on constantly and has to keep performing.
Wet areas. Vinyl handles standing water in a way timber-based floors do not. If you are weighing up a bathroom, laundry or kitchen, our guide to waterproof flooring for Melbourne bathrooms and kitchens compares the options side by side.
Rental properties and investment stock. Hard-wearing, easily replaced, straightforward to clean between tenancies. Our investor's guide to rental flooring goes into what actually lasts in a rental.
Homes with pets. Scratch resistance and waterproofing both matter here, and our pet-friendly flooring guide covers what to look for.
Where Armstrong is not the obvious answer is a living room where you mainly want the warmth and look of real timber. For that, engineered timber or hybrid usually wins, and we would tell you so.
The Armstrong ranges Alpha Flooring stocks#
Here are four of the ranges we carry, with what we can tell you accurately about each.
Super Safe Safety — 12 colours#
Super Safe Safety is the Armstrong range Melbourne customers look at most on this site. The name describes the purpose: it is a safety vinyl, made for places where slip resistance is the first requirement rather than an afterthought. Available as both plank and sheet.
Accolade Foothold — 23 colours#
Accolade Foothold is the widest colour choice of any Armstrong range we stock, at twenty-three options. Also available as sheet. If you are matching a floor into an existing fit-out, this is usually the range with a colour close enough to work.
Wallflex — 10 colours#
Wallflex is wall cladding rather than flooring — a vinyl sheet product for walls, commonly specified where a wall surface needs to be washable and sealed to the same standard as the floor. Ten colours, and also available as sheet. Worth knowing it exists if your project needs the walls handled as well as the floor.
Armstrong — 1 colour#
Armstrong — listed on the site under its own brand name — is a single-colour line in our stock. Small, but listed here so you can see it rather than wonder.
Beyond these four we hold ten more Armstrong ranges, including Accolade Plus, Accolade Safe, Natural Creations Longplank, Natural Creations XL, Quantum, Timberline, Excelon VCT and three Safeguard ranges graded R10, R11 and R12. All of them are on the Armstrong vinyl page.
How to choose between the ranges#
A simple way through it:
-
Is slip resistance the main requirement? Then start with the safety ranges — Super Safe Safety, Accolade Safe, or one of the Safeguard grades. The R10, R11 and R12 names refer to slip-resistance grades, so if your specification names a grade, the range matching it is already chosen for you.
-
Is matching an existing colour the main requirement? Start with the widest ranges — Accolade Foothold at twenty-three colours, then Accolade Plus and Timberline at twenty each.
-
Is this a wet area with constant water? Look at sheet rather than plank, for the joins reason above.
-
Do the walls need treating too? Wallflex handles that alongside the floor.
-
Do you actually want the look of timber more than vinyl performance? Then compare against hybrid and engineered timber before committing to vinyl at all.
What we cannot tell you from a web page#
We would rather be straight with you about the limits of an article like this.
Prices are on the product pages, not here. Each range is priced by colour, format and the size of the job, so a number in a guide would be misleading. Follow the links above to the range you are interested in, or ask us for a written quote.
Warranty terms, wear-layer thicknesses and exact slip ratings come from the manufacturer's current documentation, which changes. Rather than print a figure here that might be out of date by the time you read it, we will give you the current specification for the exact range you are considering — in writing, before you commit.
Samples beat screens. Vinyl photographs differently from how it looks in a room. Twenty-three colours is a real choice, and it is not one to make from a monitor.
See Armstrong vinyl at our Docklands showroom#
The sensible next step with a brand this broad is to see it. Our showroom is at 351 Docklands Dr, Docklands VIC 3008, open Monday to Saturday 9am–5pm.
Bring your plans, your specification if you have one, and any colour you are matching to. We will show you the Armstrong ranges that fit your project, give you the current manufacturer specification for them, and arrange a free in-home or on-site measure.
